Many of our favorite designs incorporate square on edge jump rings. What is that? It is a round jump ring that is made from square wire that is turned on edge so it looks like a diamond shape and even appears faceted. When translating chainmaille weaves into square on edge, it is important to remember that square wire has 30% more volume than the same wire in a round shape. An aspect ratio chart or calculator will certainly help, but the resulting numbers are not always reliable. I frequently have to make custom mandrels to get just the right sized ring to create a weave that is structured and fluid.
